Learn to speak Japanese and chat thread!!

Postby Cylanu on Fri May 21, 2004 3:44 am

First there's the greeting when you meet someone or say 'hi' to your friend.

'konnichiwa' means hello, good afternoon, good morning, but mainly hello or hi. You pronounce it like this:

KO-NEE-chee-wah

The two 'ee's a long e, so it's just pronounced 'E'

I knew that 'good morning' was different than the other one.
I just couldn't remember so I put it in with the 'konnichiwa'.

Anyways, the next word I'm going to put up is 'Shi-gatsu'. Which is 'April'. It could be the month or name if you want.

in Japanese, months' name are very simple :
"gatsu" means month. then you just have to put the month's number (January is 1, February is 2 etc....) and that's it!

cylanu's example was April -> shi - gatsu

how to count in Japanese :

1 : ichi
2 : ni
3 : san
4 : shi or yon
5 : go
6 : roku
7 : shichi or nana
8 : hachi
9 : kyû or ku
10 : jû
11 : jû ichi
12 : jû ni

now exercise : give all the twelve months^^

Aww... I didn't know that you knew that much.

All, well.

So the next word is going to be 'akuma'. That means 'devil' or 'demon'.

My cousin had that as his nickname at the um... video game tournament thingy. It was is Edmonton. He knows what it means too. He's a high school drop-out. Well enough about him.

"akuma" is a word that is often seen in anime or video games, but i think that the character who made that word known by all is undoubtly the street fighter series character AKUMA.

Image
that name suits him well doesn't it?

notice that in japanese versions of the games his name is gouki or gôki, which has the same meaning...

AWESOME!!
That picture looks kewl, but a lil scary.
Anyways it's awesome. :)

Here is the next word its extremely easy to say:

a' ....That lil thing beside it is supposed to be there.
pronounced-> 'ah' or 'oh'

That means= a sound of amazement or wonder. Just the sound like 'ah' or 'oh'.

That doesn't make sense. All well.

What do you mean by 'what the h... he is saying????'?? :?

On to a new topic, well sort of.

Anyways, my cousin is sort of teaching me some japanese phrases. Like 'otanjoubi-omeditou'. That means Happy Birthday.

And um.. I have japanese auntie and she told me that it was right. Her birthday was on a Sunday last month. I don't know that exact date.
She knows a lot of english and she has an accent. Well enough about her.

Sometimes I'm not sure if my cousin is correct on the japanese phrases. But ah, well.

He also taught me a few other phrases.

But I'll save them till the next post.
